Yesterday I’d been in town working with my design artist on new brochures for my upcoming book and was returning home down Blue Mountain Highway. Just as I reached my neighbors house, I saw something flash to the side of me in the pasture at a dead run. I realized it was a horse that belonged to someone up the road. I didn’t want him to reach Highway 40 because it’s dangerous with truck traffic. I got out of my pickup walked toward the strawberry roan and started talking to him. Of course, since he was lose, he was wild. His eyes showed white, his nostrils flared. He had a halter on, but at first I wasn’t sure he’d let me get hold of him. I just stood and talked to him for a few minutes until he finally settled and walked right up to me. I had picked up a bailing twine by then and slipped it through his halter. Just about that time, my grateful neighbor showed up on his 4-wheeler. He’d left the gate open.
